The small victory of Monster’s retreat was swept away but the cold tide of the silvey bay’s anger. For the grullo’s sake, it was fortunate that the Andalusian mare’s muscles turned rigid and hard, that the puppet-strings of her limbs were momentarily severed. Because if she could have— if she’d been able to— there wouldn’t have been a word or wound that could have stopped her from tearing that arrogant bitch to pieces. As it was, Rivaini’s jaw was too tightly clenched to even answer the wretched woman’s lies with some hard truths of her own. Like how worthless an alliance with Rougaru had proven to be. How little she cared that it was lost. After all, what had the chocolate stallion ever done for them?

Nothing. They’d been left to stand alone against Nyimara’s irrational hatred, left to piece together the broken shell of the son he’d foisted upon them alone. In the end, Rivaini hadn’t even told the Wolf-King what had happened to Hades. Why should she bother? He had more important things to worry about than a child he’d seen only once— like chasing women who didn’t want him. Like acting only in his own interests and without a care for those he’d made vows with. Because it was always about Rougaru, wasn’t it? The whole damn world could burn down around him, but as long as his home was safe— as long as he got his way— the silver stallion couldn’t care less.

Well, he would see for himself what such actions reaped. Monster, too. Feeling the tension in her muscles abruptly ease, Rivaini turned to head back into the Ridge’s heart with a significant glance at her shadow. They would need to talk— if not today, then soon. With the alliance officially ended, Atlantis itself was no longer the haven it’d once been. They were well and truly alone now, and needed to be ready for what the future might bring.
