My Trip to Dania & Magic City, Part 1

Like a lot of other posters, I had to make one last visit to Dania, so I got a late deal, and flew down and was there last week.

DANIA: I hadn't been in 4 years, and I was taken aback at how much more the casino creeped into the building. The only analogy I could think of is an old man dying while his nephews are building around the house using gaudy materials.

I couldn't find where to get a program and people working didn't even know. The casino has almost completely cast off the jai-alai identity already. In the restaurant there is a picture from John Travolta in the "Saturday Night Fever" days with a cesta--I could swear this is from Bridgeport Jai-Alai.

Overall, the jai-alai was great and after not watching much in recent years other than amateur play, I have an even greater appreciation for how hard the sport is. I understand the business reasoning, but it is a terrible shame that some of the bright young talent won't have anywhere to play. The owners are absolutely deluding themselves if they think that their casino will give them an edge against any other facility. The jai-alai was the difference. Even if they ran it in December/January (like Miami did), it would have been worth keeping it for some type of identity.

The crowd varied, but only a couple of dozen stayed the whole time. And I got to meet Haitian Gary by total chance.

This post got long already, so I'll post the Magic City part when I Have a minute.
