HEROES GET REMEMBERED

Ghosts. So many ghosts, all of them dancing just out of reach. Anath hears them in her sleep… sees them in her sleep. That’s the thing about being haunted… you can always see them. The first ghost of them all was one that was likely her own fault. The trappings of a Romeo and Juliette romance-- opposite sides of the same war. Kids too young to know what was good for them. We were just kids. It had been many, many years since the silvered stallion had struck down his own son. Anath could still see Lothor’s face in her dreams at night.

Maybe that was what drove her to the Desert, before even the Badlands called her name. Maybe that was why she dragged herself from the ocean, and into the sunny summer heat. Things hadn’t changed so much since she’d seen it last, though there was clearly someone else in charge now. Gloryhound had been struck dead when she was a young woman, fierce and strong. It was her only regret that she hadn’t been able to do it herself. More ghosts, more far away visions dancing in her mind.

There were so many ghosts here, and Anath walked among them. The morning was still relatively young, and she tracked inland. Wouldn’t want to intrude… no. The aging mare just wanted to see the place again. It hadn’t been home so much as it had been… something else. The Desert was always the source of so much ire. She’d shed blood here, her own, that of others. The battle… the war. The war that her father, her uncle, had waged on the king, and to what end? A stack of bodies on each side.

Her expression, however, is not troubled. Anath seems perfectly content as she peers out over the Desert. She would simply look for now. It was hard not to take it all in, especially under her present circumstances. It was beautiful and it was strange. The knot in her chest wasn’t likely to go away any time soon, but that was okay. She could handle that for now.
