GUIDELINES

- the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
- anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors
we could be strangers in the night

YOUR LOVE IS ALWAYS DANGEROUS
and now i'm lost in us

She was quick to let him know almost exactly what she thought, not with her words, but with her body. Zevulun was smart enough to pick up on it, too, and grew curious. He could assume a million reasons she might feel ill of him, but he hadn’t been expecting it with the way his and Larka’s meeting had gone. Was this mare - Riesling, she’d introduced herself as - angry at him for forcing them to share their home? That was the most obvious thing he could assume, and Zevulun knew she was right for how she felt, if that were the case. He’d been worried about such a thing, anyways.

He dipped his head in careful understanding and paused, eyes ever steady on her, clearly at an impasse at deciding what to say. He went back-and-forth for a small bit of extended time, drew a breath and sighed before saying, “Well, I didn’t want to make anyone homeless.” It was a weak excuse, even if it was true.

It wasn’t the whole truth.

The mare didn’t have to say anything but stare at him and Zevulun felt the strangest urge to come clean. He wanted to tell her things he had kept close to his chest and, before he knew it, he was casually explaining…

“I was too afraid to go back to my birth land. My family abandoned it a few years ago when my father died and I hear it has a family now. Life. It seemed… wrong to assume I had a right to it, to go and try to overthrow who’s kept it warm and going when our bloodline failed it. So I just wanted to find somewhere else first. Somewhere quiet. So I didn’t do something stupid when I finally got the courage to go back there.”

He trailed off and realized how much he’d said. He felt a little embarrassed and averted his eyes down to their reflection in the water, watching how it barely rippled, gone still now that they weren’t drinking from it. He cleared his throat and pulled his eyes back up to her.

“I thought this place was empty. I’m… sorry if you’re angry with me for barging in here. I get it. I really do. I just… I hope I can add to your family. I wasn’t trying to take anything away from you.”
