TAMPA CLOSING BEING DENIED BY OWNERSHIP
-----The Florida Gaming Corporation is denying a rumor that it is planning
to shut down Tampa Jai-Alai this coming summer and sell the site to a firm
that wants to develop a shopping center there.
-----Florida Gaming President Benny Collett called a meeting with Tampa's
management late Friday afternoon to shoot down the story, which was fueled
by the offering of only six-month contracts to the roster for 1998 and the
recent resignation of fronton General Manager Giles Ellis.
-----Collett said the six-month deals were being given to better motivate
the players and to allow the company to make changes for what could become
a lighter schedule in the second half of the year.
-----Florida Gaming is now the biggest company in the sport, having bought
Tampa, Miami, Ocala and Fort Pierce from the now defunct World Jai-Alai in
-----In other Tampa news, Jabi is about to take his second triple crown in
the last three seasons. The 21-year-old became the youngest ever to win it
at Tampa, when he beat Bolivar's record by only a few months in 1996.
