handle with care.

Winter had come on strong in the Bay, and Vera wasn’t sure how to feel about that. Since Zevulun had come and gone, she’d wondered more about what the other islands had to offer. Were there places with more comfortable winters, less harsh and frigid? Was there somewhere out there that would be warm all year? Vera didn’t know. There were so many thoughts in her head, it was hard to keep track of them all. Too many things she didn’t know, or didn’t understand.

Still, things weren’t… weren’t so bad. The Bay certainly was pretty, and she could enjoy that at least. In a copse of pine trees, the sooty mare found refuge from the wind. It had picked up considerably in the last few days. That wind was the same one that had carried the first snow of the season in. Vera tipped her head upwards to watch it fall, feeling the great, fluffy flakes of it catch in her eyelashes and forelock. Today was okay. Today would be okay, at least, if she had any say in the matter.

She knew not what the future would hold, but for now, everything was alright. At least Vera had that to rest on. Gently melancholy in the low light of the snowy afternoon, the sooty mare was comfortable. The melancholy had become her friend.
