Her accent was unexpected and momentarily surprised him. At first when she’d claimed to be from the north, he immediately assumed she meant Tinuvel. It took him a second to realize she meant she’d crossed from the Mainlands, north, and just arrived. It was the fresh sea on her coat and the sort of confusion that newcomers to the islands had which tipped him off. Raziel felt like he stood in the in-between, born an islander, lived on the Mainlands for most of his life, and returned back to apparently settle for good.

But he still knew where they were and could help her.

Right. Help her. That’s what he was supposed to be doing.

“The trees are uh, right over here.” He said, nodding his head up the shoreline and further inland, through the dunes and foothills until the mountains began. The trees would grow nice and thick there and, with any luck, they could find a decent sized boulder that might block them from the wind completely.

Raziel turned to lead the white-haired, blue mare up the shoreline and wondered what the hell he was up to. Why was he leading her there? Why didn’t he just point her where she needed to go and turn around to be alone as he’d intended to be?

It was already too late to stop now, of course. He was already leading her up toward the trees and knew it’d be pretty rude of him to tell her to get lost once they got there. “Your accent,” he said, flicked his ears and wondered if it was rude to point it out, then shook his head and kept talking, “uh- I haven’t heard it before. You’re from somewhere far away? Ever heard of these islands before?” The shadows of trees loomed up ahead and he flicked his pale blue eyes back to her.
