the ace in exile

The follies of the young, and their tender hearts. Though Viđarr knew them well, he’d also been burned by them. There were things that had put him over the edge, the things that had put him in a situation where he needed to simply leave. There was a reason he’d run, and a reason he’d done his best to put out of his mind. Viđarr was always someone else’s champion… now that he was here, he could be his own. With no one to protect, no one to stand for, he had to be.

Maybe that was the problem with pinning so much of your very being on being something to everyone else. You never learn how to stand on your own feet, and you never learn how to act with your own best interest in mind. Viđarr could feel the thoughts sinking in around the edges, and they certainly weren’t good ones. It had been some time since he’d really needed to think as he did. Maybe it was better that way.

She speaks of raising the dead and turning back time… the shadow hums softly to himself. Maybe it’s for the best that he can do neither, because within them, there is so much heartbreak and so much pain. The walk a path that’s determined by the gods, and to do so would spite them in a way that Viđarr wasn’t comfortable with. Still, he understands the desire. It’s a wish he’d made himself more than once. Softly, his muzzle brushed her shoulder once more.

You could tell me your name? That was something within his power. “Viđarr,” his voice is more confident, less stilted, as it plays in the sounds of his mother tongue. “What is yours?” It’s a soft question, but he’d take her name and hold it close to his chest, as he had with the others he’d become fond of here. A protector by nature, Viđarr needed someone to look out for. He could do the same for this flaxen woman, and it certainly seemed she needed it.

“I can offer you safety, if you would like it,” it’s a gentle offer. “I make my home in the Savanna, on an island to the north east of here.” Viđarr didn’t feel right about the prospect of simply leaving the woman here, alone with her sadness. “No need to commit to anything, you can come and go as you like,” the words came quickly. Frankly, it’s far more words than the shadow has put together in some time. Though nervous about the woman’s reaction, the offer was in earnest. There was something wrong about leaving her alone here, and he could feel that in his bones.
