better give my heart a listen

PERSEPHONE

Persephone grinned and nodded in agreement at Zevulun’s words. It was good to talk to an old friend, and one with enough years under his belt and children under his feet to really understand how time could fly. At once, in that moment, the past felt both closer and further away than ever.

The tone turned more serious then, however, as she listened to him speak of the war. His thoughts sounded familiar to Persephone, even though she herself had never been away. There had been many long nights in her life that she had stayed up wandering the Forest, unable to sleep, plagued by the what-ifs and maybes that could have changed the course of her life.

She shook her head, and offered what she hoped was a small, comforting smile.

“We cannot change the past,” she said simply with a small sigh. “And you will drive yourself crazy if you spent too much time dwelling on that possibility.”

The bittersweet thoughts hung in the air for a moment, before Zevulun thankfully turned the tone upwards. Persephone smiled warmly at his words, her heart swelling in her chest.

“That means a lot, Zevulun, thank you.”

And it did. Her words were sincere.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my watch with you at my side,” she continued with a smile

“And I’m sure you’re bound to run into my other daughter, Eadaz, soon once words spreads from her sister. I apologise in advance for any trouble she causes,” she added with a chuckle, only half joking. “How are things going over in the Prairie? Settling in okay?”
