And I think most people know that Taco Bell, among a few others, are ALWAYS short of staff resulting in long lines, screwed up orders, and in other places harsh, juvenile supervisors.
Been 60 years since I worked fast food but common sense tells me that if you pay better, you get more applicants, likely with customer srvice skills and a good work ethic. So you can be more SELECTIVE in choosing new hires; Experienced people get more money so they won't work for $10. You want to pay em enough they won't leave for $2. And you treat em well, get em into the best shifts, don't abuse them if they have car troube (as all poor people do) or sick kids.
I've always heard Hearst was a good employer, and it's showed on 9. Wasn't 9 once a Metromedia shop? There was also an unspoken rule back in Taft days that stations don't hire from across town, after salary wars with the weathermen and minority employees. 9's Brocco told me that a very long time ago and I left the industry because I didn't want to leave the market again. Cost too much money to move and disrupts spouses and kids. Some corporations, I presume in lots of industries, get around the age discrimination laws by having layoffs of their more expensive people, wait a few months, and then refill the slots with cheaper, younger workers; to them turnover's acceptable because the bottom line is the rule in corporate America.
My parents told me that first back in the 1960s... that as soon as people push age 50, you're no longer a match. Course they ALWAYS want to know what your last salary was. I'll not be convinced that it wasn't the end of the station ownership limit that killed affiliate media. (Sorry for the double negative!) Replies:
