Gravenhurst-Bracebridge Audubon Christmas Bird Count Results Dec 19, 2021

42ND GRAVENHURST-BRACEBRIDGE CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT (ONGB)

Sponsored by the Muskoka Field Naturalists
Held on Sunday December 19, 2021
19 Observers in 9 groups travelled 509 km by car and 24 km on foot.
Temperature -10 to -7 C, AM clear PM clear, Wind Chill -15 to -11C
Snow depth 0 to 2 cm, ponds and lakes open

COUNT NOTES
Again our Christmas Bird Count was curtailed by the Covid 19 global pandemic. We travelled in our own cars, kept our distance when on foot. The potluck was cancelled and the end tally was done by zoom meeting. The weather was nice and sunny but colder than it looked because of the wind chill. But the birds were still out there and many good ones were found. The total number of species was 40, above the 38.1 average of the last 10 years and the number of individuals was 2100, slightly below the 2296 average. Most of the birds were found close to feeders but the number of active feeders seemed to be lower than usual (seems like we always say this). We greatly missed two long time participants this year. After leading the Gravenhurst team for 25 years Dan Burton has passed the job to Janice House. Bill Dickinson who passed away in 2021 was a long-time group leader who knew where every bird was in his section west of Bracebridge. Cyril Fry missed the count for the first time in decades but reports that he expects to be back next year. Thanks to all the participants for helping keep the count going in difficult times.
