The new Jackson County jail planned for a location east of Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40 is a debacle before a shovel has even hit the ground. It is an ongoing public relations nightmare.
Jackson County purchased the property in August. A $1.7 million relocation plan has already been used to move 100 of the 106 residents from Heart Mobile Home Village. It will cost Jackson County taxpayers an additional $800,000 to finish the relocation.
The remaining residents said they were given a Feb. 28 deadline (now extended to March 31) to relocate, but they say they have nowhere to go. Maybe they can wait and move into the new “detention center.”
