the ace in exile

Curiosity was fleeting, and to that, Viđarr could relate. It seemed that this woman was among the same sorts of tired as he. It made sense, sort of. All of the things that swirled around his head were strange, far away. The thoughts… too many thoughts. Too loud. Far too loud, but that was fine. He could be fine, if he tried hard enough. The shadow had to try these days. That was fine. It was enough. He was enough? Maybe. Likely not for her, the woman that stood before him, but maybe for someone. He could hope, right? By the gods, Viđarr could hope.

Her posture is different, though it doesn’t take the shadow by surprise. The shieldmaidens aren’t few in number where he hails from. This is no different. Her appraising glance is one that Viđarr isn’t too unfamiliar with. Still, it seems that she’s looking straight through him, or at least, through the dark pelt that the shadow is wrapped in. It’s as if she can see more than what really meets the eye when it comes to Viđarr, and he’s not sure that he likes the feeling. At least it’s different. Uncomfortable, but refreshing. Caught somewhere in the middle of a pleasant experience and one that’s… admittedly less-so. Still, he remains neutral.

The nuance of the language is a bit lost on the shadow. His grasp on English is tenuous at best. Still, there’s an ambiguity to her tone that leaves a small flicker of a smile in his gaze, on his lips. Viđarr isn’t wholly upset with it. Uncomfortable, and yet… intrigued. He can’t help but be intrigued. She also asks about her. Viđarr let go a long sigh, considering how best to answer. It’s a moment before the shadow speaks. “I worry for her safety, especially now that the weather turns cold.” His gaze flickers from the skull faced mare to the sea, peering softly out over it. So much sea, and so little… so little of him.

“It is early. Why do you come?” A soft question, one that comes from somewhere within his ribs. It seemed that everyone would be hurting, this season. Hurting and pushing back against the demons that no one else could see. So it goes.
