How has she survived this long?

She learned to eat just by watching the various horses coming and going. It doesn’t matter what her mother had taught her before her death, she lost all of it. Luna had been completely dependent on her mother (rightfully so since she was only a year old). Now that the her mother has been gone she has been living like she, herself, was already dead. Unable to provide for herself, unable to approach strangers even just for a hello. She couldn’t do any of it! Months of her youth she had spent wondering the Peak aimlessly watching the other mares in the distance. She watched them graze so that she may learn how to eat just enough to stay alive. She does just that.

Since then the large bred mare was now so skinny her ribs show through her skin. Even at a distance you could see some of her bone structure. She did not know how to survive alone, but today would be different. Today was the day she would find something to live for! Someone to live for, anyway. She stands, years of abuse on her own body making the simple task difficult, and eventually leaves her hiding place. If she couldn’t find help she knew she wouldn’t make it much longer.

Luna travels just enough away from her hiding place to reach the falls. The red spotted mare reaches the side of the water only to lay down on the cold rocks. A light snow soon begins to collect on her back as she strains her neck to drink from the water below. It took such energy just to walk from her hiding spot to a place she might be seen by others that she couldn’t stand on her hooves any longer. After taking a long sip, her muzzle points to the sky. A lonely call then leaves her lips.
