Meadow

The proud roan mare moves with grace through the Meadow. Her breath swirls and cascades from her flared nostrils as she surveys the dead trees with their spindly limbs. Winter. She pauses a moment to dip her head to the foot of snow that had accumulated in the clearing over night. Food was scarce in winter and today was no exception. Her stomach growled unflatteringly in protest from the emptiness within her belly. "Shhh..." she whispers into nothing. She slinks a bit further into the clear meadow, eyes watchful and aware. A cream hoof stretches before her as she paws into the snow, her hoof sinking in the earth in an attempt to found even a bit of grass. She'd soon be reduced to stripping bark from a tree like a deer if she didn't find nourishment soon. She snorts as her digging reveals nothing but mud.

Vassa's coat was thick enough to hide what would be revealed ribs. This winter alone had been harsher than she'd expected, but she'd managed to live in solitary confinement. She moved ahead carefully as the tree line loomed before her cerulean eyes. There. Her eyes glittered with surprise as she spotted the few blades of grass stretching from the base of the hollowed tree. The Mother must be watching over her. Her slow walk instantly broke into a trot as she reached the small patch of green grass and she ate quickly, taking her focus away from her surroundings. A twig snapped into the distance and her head shot up, ears pricking and circling to locate the direction of the sound. "Who is there?" She says, eyes narrowing.
