Home is where your teeth sink in

I’ll keep the door open
in case you come home

“Will you show me your favorite place?” she said, her voice a soft murmur against his chest. Kohelet seemed to enjoy when Fell had tucked her face away, or at least she had stopped looking so sad. He could feel her soft smile against his collarbones, her eyelashes tickling him ever so slightly as she lipped the taught skin of his breast.

He had to consider her question for a moment. It wasn’t that he did not have a favorite place (it was, in fact, the one place they had spent time together) but rather, he had a few. Obviously, the pools where the water from deep below the ground ran hot up to the surface was top of his list, but he had already shared that with Kohelet. If this was to be her home, she wouldn’t exactly be confined to the hot springs, as heavenly as they were. There were a million things he loved about the Bay, despite being so new to it; he could take her anywhere, really.

But there were a few places that seemed… special. He hadn’t thought twice about them when he first arrived on Tinuvel and explored his new home, but as he thought of them now, trying to see them through Kohelet’s eyes, he thought there might be more to them.

After a moment of consideration, Fell nodded soberly, and turned towards the mountains where they rose impassively into the sky. His steps through the trees were purposeful, as though he were on a very important mission, but he did not rush. He could feel Kohelet behind him, and her excitement ignited him. Fell’s misgivings about Solomon’s visit had all but faded, and although he was trying to be serious about bringing Kohelet to a special place, it was difficult to keep his attention on the way ahead. Both of his hooked ears were turned backwards toward his painted companion, and all but the necessary amount of focus to keep him on the right path was trained behind him. His skin felt flushed and hot whenever her eyes rested on him, and it took a considerable amount of self control not to turn around and initiate another dance like their first.

But he managed to contain himself, at least until his destination was there to distract him. The ground had begun to slope upward, and Fell could hear the sound of running water growing louder as they grew close. Ahead of them, tucked away in a little valley of moss-covered stones, was a clear little pool and a waterfall. The waterfall was mostly frozen this time of year, save for a little spout of running water about the width of Fell’s hoof, as was the majority of the pool it splashed into. The moss was dead and flaking off the stones, and leaves choked the stream that ran down the hill behind them. It was… not so pretty, this time of year.

Fell still liked it, though. It was clean water to drink that you didn’t have to break through ice to get to, and the spire of ice that rose up into the rocks above glittered prettily in the sun.

Uncertainly, he turned to gauge Kohelet’s reaction. Even if he could speak, Fell could not have explained exactly why he brought her to this place specifically, but for some reason, this fact did not frustrate him. He was curious to see what meaning of her own Kohelet might find in the lonely little waterfall.

He hoped she would like it, too.
