Mobilisation - 04/08/1914
Location: Manchester. The 42nd (East Lancashire) Division was an existing Territorial Force division, drawn primarily from Manchester, Salford and the surrounding towns. Following the order to mobilise on 4th August, 1914, from 20th August those men who volunteered for foreign service began to move into camps for training.

British War Medal
British War MedalWith the information in J Wallace's record, it is likely that they were entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Victory Medal
With the information in J Wallace's record, it is likely that they were entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

Territorial Force Efficiency Medal
Territorial Force Efficiency Medal Instituted in 1908 the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal was a medal of the United Kingdom awarded to other ranks for long service in the Territorial Force. This award superseded the Volunteer Long Service Medal when the Territorial Force was formed in 1908 following the enactment of the Territorial and Reserve Forces Act 1907.

Alan F MacLure in all probability will be Lt. Colonel Alan F MacLure CO 7th Bn. He has 10 entries on the Forces War Record Web Site. You will need the check these yourself. Access is via subscription. He also has a number of mentions in The History of the Lancashire Fusiliers 1914-1918 by Major -General J.C. Latter, CBE. M.C. A link to Volume 1 can be found on the Web Site Index Page. Pages 2,8,60 and 63 refer.

In both cases information on each will also be held by the National Archives at Kew and in particular the Medal Rolls and Medal Card Index held by ancestry.com in liason with the National Archives.
All pre 1920 information on Veterans of WWI are held by the National Archives and thus would be you best source of further information on both. The one caveat however is that millions of records were lost during the London Blitz of 1940 when the Central Records Depository at Arnside Street London was destroyed by incendiary bombs. Amongst records lost were practically all Service Records of WWI Veterans. This of course presents extreme difficulties in obtaining further information in respect of individual Veterans. That said a small number of records were recovered from the burnt out building and are now held by the National Archives in what is known as the burnt records collection. It will be worth searching both their names through the National Archives search engines.
