As his identical twin brother approached without malice, Oberyn felt the weight on his shoulders begin to loosen. Maybe… maybe he had been right. Maybe there was a right time to do this, and now was that time. He couldn’t be sure, of course, but…
Damascus reached for him in greeting. There was only the barest sliver of hesitation from Oberyn before he, too, reached out with his velvet dark muzzle, breathing in the familiar scent of his other half.
Other half. He smells like me, Oberyn thought. After all this time apart, they still reflected each other in more ways than not. Oberyn was… tired of fighting that, and he sensed that Damascus was going through the same.
It had just been so long. Such a long time of feeling out of place and
wrong.
Damascus turned, and began to walk back up the beach.
How have you been, brother? he asked, looking over his shoulder, a gesture that Oberyn took to be equivalent to an invitation. He followed, first keeping a bit of distance, but eventually coming to walk in stride with his twin.
“Ah, I’ve been better,” he said, rolling his shoulders in a shrug.
“Running from your problems gets… a bit lonely.” He gazed around at the trees that now reached up to shade them from the warm sun, but the coolness was pleasant. He recognized this place, vaguely, from the first time he had come. It was not a far stretch for him to guess that Damascus had more or less made this his home. He did not smell any other horses within the woods they walked, and wondered if his brother had been alone all this time.
“What about you?” he asked, the gentle breeze fluttering his dark mane and tail, teasing up the dark hairs of his coat.
“Have you explored this place any further? Seen the other islands?”
