Home is where your teeth sink in [Mae]

I’ll keep the door open
in case you come home

Moonlight still spilled over the sea as the pair swam North from Salem. There was a pale sliver of light in the horizon far away, but dawn was still a few hours away. Fell was exhausted, his energy from chasing the pale mare up the beach nearly spent now that he faced the arduous task of keeping himself afloat and also actually moving through the water. He was lucky the ocean was calm tonight, the sky clear, the wind a gentle breeze that kissed his face with a fine spray off the waves.

Fell was, in truth, shocked that the silvery mare had actually followed him home. He guided her through the long swim toward Tinuvel, the water growing cooler as they went. A chill autumn breeze swept the beach as Fell stepped onto the soft sand and pulled himself from the waves, giving his ink-dark body a vigorous shake. Turning, he watched as the pale woman followed, making sure she was not hurt or overly tired before leading her into the shelter of the trees.

Once out of the wind, Fell halted. He may have been a brute, but he was a clever brute. He knew that the silver mare would be cold coming to Tinuvel from Salem, so he turned to her, extending his muzzle so that he could begin to groom and dry her.

If she let him, anyway. Fell was still so accustomed to fighting with everyone he met that he fully expected her to rebuke him. He was persistent by nature, though; not to mention she had seemed to like him enough in the Badlands. It was worth a shot. And if she did chase him away, well — he was too tired to push it. Neither could he be truly angry. She was in the Bay now; they had time.
