I love you more in my head

I love you more in my head
but I’ll love you better when I’m dead

Predictably, the scent of a stallion floated to Naydra on the heavy breeze as she made her way. She paused, not bothering to look around. She could feel eyes on her, and her ears flipped back in mild irritation. What did you expect? It’s Fall.

A rustle in the leaves to her left. Naydra sighed, letting him look at her for a minute before she turned to acknowledge him. This seemed to be taken as an invitation, because as soon as she laid her honey-gold gaze on him, he stepped closer. The coal-black mare did not move, her expression guarded as the pale dun stallion extended his muzzle in greeting. Naydra briefly wondered how amusing it might be to sink her teeth into the poor man’s sensitive nose, to deny him her scent (or anyone else’s) by filling his nostrils with the iron reek of blood.

It was probably too soon for that.

Naydra allowed the pale stallion to take in her scent, blowing the most delicate of breaths in his direction as he did so. He pulled back, and as he did so, Naydra became aware of movement beyond the two of them.

A great sable cat of a stallion circled them, cunningly downwind, certainly an intentional decision on his part. The dun bachelor spoke, and though she heard him, her eyes followed the other. He was dangerous, and suddenly Naydra was a little less irritated at being approached. She deliberately removed her attention from the bronze predator, even as he grew closer, and peered out at the dun stallion from beneath her lashes.

“Yes, of course,” she said, smiling with just so much honey. Her voice might have been a cat’s, if a cat could speak. The voice of someone who knows more than you do, and has no intention of letting you in on the secret. “I must have wandered a bit too far.” Too far from where, Naydra didn’t know, nor did she care. “Thank you for reminding me.”

Above, the air thickened, and thunder rolled through the trees where the three stood. It was going to rain.
