days in the sun will return

HOW IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS SORROW
can so much hope and love endure?

As Maziel sniffed the air near where her new sister stood, ears perked and listening, she felt a warmth of familial love tug at her already very big, accepting and welcoming heart. Of course it was likely because Tavas smelled of Ramiel and Zevulun that made her so quick to accept, but when the feminine voice spoke and claimed her mother, Maziel couldn’t help but suck in a quick breath. “Vita Nova?” She repeated softly.

While Mariael had her special bond with their father and Zevulun had his, Maziel had her own as well. Nephilim had (perhaps wrongly) taken to his loving daughter's patient, mature point-of-view and admired her compassion so much he often shared with her things a father shouldn’t put upon his daughter. But Maziel had loved that he had trusted her with the knowledge.

“My father spoke of your mother quite often to me,” Maziel said warmly, smiling toward where she’d heard the mare speak. “He loved her very much.”

Hooves on the ground told her the mare was retreating and she took a few quick inhales through her soft brown nose, then turned her face toward her nephew. She was so excited to tell him… “I think Mariael may be living in the Arch.”

“She isn’t with you?” Ramiel was taken aback.

Sorrow touched the lines of Maziel’s face as her chin slightly dropped. “No,” she admitted, “she left me and Paradiso a few years ago; I tried to come find her. The last territory I haven’t visited is the Arch, and I believe she’s there.”
