August 2022 Pome

AS THE DOG STAR RISES

"Dog Days bright and clear
Indicate a happy year;
But when accompanied by rain,
For better times, our hopes are vain."

Since great Augustus gave his name
To this hot month, give him the blame
For sweltering days and torrid nights
Of turns and tossings, bedbug-bites,
Of overheated lighting-bills,
Along with several other ills,

When gardens wither into brown,
And rich folks mosey out of town,
To mountains, or the cooling shore--
But I can't go there any more,
With fuel prices out of sight.
I think I may get drunk tonight.
