Why can’t we all be a family again? Devi’s sad little words made his heart ache and Orphiel wished more than anything he could give her an answer she’d understand. He couldn’t speak on what had happened between him and her mother, for even though she was there in the Prairie when they’d found out, he felt she was too young to understand exactly what had happened. It was better she didn’t know, he thought.
“It would be nice if we could all be a family in the Thicket again.” He said a little wistfully, though he wasn’t thinking of any of her other so-called fathers. Orphiel was only thinking of their trio, and how happy and wonderful life had been when it was just them. “But,” a low sigh, “life doesn’t always give us what we want.”
When she asked about Frey, Orphiel frowned. The Lagoon General (newly appointed) was likely the closest thing to a friend that Orphiel could currently consider himself having. It had been the big, dark red stallion that’d welcomed him into the Lagoon when Orphiel had been lost and unsure of what his next step should be.
“I’ve met him,” he admitted, “He lives with me in the Lagoon. I’m… sure he would love to meet you, Devi,” he said, though he wasn’t actually sure if that was the truth. He didn’t know much personally about Frey, but the stallion seemed to have enough on his plate at any given time. “But I don’t think he likes leaving the Lagoon very much.” Was that an okay enough excuse? He wasn’t too sure.
“Why don’t you show me some of your favorite spots?” He asked, pointing his dark muzzle inland. As much as he almost wished she would have told him she was sad living here, Orphiel knew that was a selfish sort of jealousy. He just wanted her to be sad without him like he was without them. But, loving Devi like he did, he knew he needed to be happy that she was happy.
