FIRE CANNOT KILL A DRAGONSuddenly the world was more. The intensity of sounds, smells, and things to look at was overwhelming as the small filly took her first gasping breaths. As her damn freed her of the birthing sac she reached out with her slender muzzle seeking contact. Soft puffs of breath fell from her quivering nostrils as she sought out the one thing she had known these last 11 months. Mother. A small squeak, more mouse than horse, erupted from her mouth, the vibration of her own vocal chords startling the filly enough that she shook her head and thumped her tiny tail against the sand in protest.
As her mother begins to clean her, Rhaenys takes this opportunity to look at the world around her. She is in awe of things, so much larger than the tight cozy home she had known. She sneezes a few times, long limbs stretching out, as she seeks to find purchase on the uneven ground.
Finally she finds some semblance of footing and hoists herself up. Her first steps are awkward and she walks at an uneven gait as she seeks to find the source of mother's milk. She finds it soon, latching on and suckling hungrily. Her hooves stomp an erratic rhythm as she tippy-taps on bouncing legs. There is so much world and she can barely stand still. Though their moment is soon interruted and Rhaenys cannot help but go on high alert.
When the stranger speaks, Rhaenys wheels around, milk dribbling from her small whiskered lips. Instinctively her ears burrow themselves in the short silvery hair that juts up in tufts from her crest. She does not look threatening in the least, as she stomps her feet and shows off gums, but she is trying valiantly. She turns her dark gaze to her mother, searching for some clue in her dam's face.
She does not yet know what lies ahead of her. One day the world will quake beneath her hooves. She will be more than a lost dragon in the desert. She will be a queen. Whatever she must do, she will, and she will take what she is owed.
