- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors

With Ramiel gone, taken to Salem, Jasper felt a larger sense of importance in his newly appointed title as herd guardian. Since their father had agreed to allow him to take on the role, Jasper had been doing so alongside his older brother in order to learn from him. Without Ramiel with him it felt strange, and he walked the edges of the Prairie territory with a bit of trepidation coiled tight in his muscles.

Jasper was not a fool and knew he was far smaller and frailer than a colt his age should be. Maturing into adulthood, he was already halfway past his second year, but Jasper could have easily passed for one of the other yearlings in the Prairie. It gave him more to make up for and more to feel he needed to prove, even if his father would never outright tell him so.

It was when he was standing by himself that he was approached by a colt, likely similar in age to him, who Jasper had never seen. He hesitated in step, head high with alert and blue eyes bright. Maybe it was his inexperience that made him let his guard down with a colt his age, thinking he couldn’t possibly have come here to cause any troubles with the herd. At any rate, Jasper didn’t sense he was a threat he needed to stand on-guard against, so he relaxed his stance, letting his pale tail rest flat against his white-and-gold hind.

Hey, um… I- Jasper’s ears were forward and he tilted his head with further curiosity, watching the colt stand among the shadows of the treeline. Is this the Prairie?

Jasper’s white face bobbed as he offered a quick nod. “Yeah, this is the Prairie.” It made his curiosity increase even further, wondering what young horse might be specifically seeking the Prairie for. Was this a partial-sibling of his? Some child his father had sired somewhere else on the islands who’d never made it to meet him? Jasper frowned, thinking through all he knew of his extended family, but couldn’t remember his father ever mentioning having another son around his age somewhere off among the islands.

I’ve never seen so much grass, ‘cept when I was little and we traveled through the Meadow. Me and my…

The way the boy trailed off was sudden, and Jasper knew he didn’t understand exactly why, but the way the emotions cut the words told him enough. He’d lost something when he was very young, his mother, but didn’t have many memories to hold on to her like he wished he might. Still, if he did, he’d imagine he might’ve broken the words away before he could reveal it to a stranger just like the young colt in front of him had.

I’m Khan, ‘n’ I’m looking for Darshan.

Jasper’s heart sank. He opened his mouth, but found the words stalled, and before he could catch himself and speak through the sinking dread, Khan was talking again.

If she doesn't want to see me -- The nimble boy turned away and Jasper’s blue eyes grew even sadder. M’just gonna go. When you see her, can you tell her…

Jasper’s throat was tight. The boy’s eyes caught his, and Jasper’s expression tightened with sympathy and sadness. He’d known of Darshan by name, by understanding and learning every horse in the Prairie, their role here, and everything he felt was important to keep in mind as guardian. He had also known she had a child elsewhere, he’d heard snippets of adult conversations over the years, though they’d often gone hushed if they ever caught on that the children were listening. What he knew though was that Darshan had gone away from the Prairie and had a child somewhere else and when Balor went to find her, he hadn’t come back.

Now… now…

“I’m… so sorry,” Jasper said in a hushed voice, his gold ears turning out in anguish, “Darshan… Darshan passed away.”
