Use caution when the wolf comes knocking;

The silver bay stallion is a boy again, emerald eyes alight with delight at having been granted the attention he sought from the battle scarred roan stallion. Though Hound is older now then he had been in those days, still there is something about stirring the old beast from his slumber that thrills and excites Rougaru in a way no other ever could. An impish grin slides across his own graying muzzle as the silver bay stallion tucks his head against his chest, flexing the muscles along his arching neck. ”Who you calling old dog…” he teases, his cream and caramel tail flicking audibly against his heels. A single lobe tilts back as the boyish grin slides across his handsome face. Emerald eyes gaze appraisingly at his resting sire, humor coloring his tone as he continues, ”You looked in the mirror lately?”

Eagerly he uncurls his neck as Hound stretches his whiskered muzzle towards him. Paper thin nostrils flare as he drinks in the long dormant scent of his father, letting the familiar scent reawaken the memories or Ora that had been buried long ago. The smile on his lips broaden as the old dog snaps at the sensitive flesh of his muzzle and like Rougaru lets out a coltish squeal of indignation. Instinctively he shifts his weight to his hind legs, thrusting a foreleg in mock challenge to the bay roan stallion as he had done so often as a rambunctious child. It always used to work. It may have taken a few purposeful scrapes of his then small hooves, but in the end, usually Hound would rouse himself from his lazy slumber and chase him down the rocky beach until he managed to catch the youthful wolf and practice skills that had taught Rougaru to be the successful stallion he has become.

Well, the successful stallion he used to be. At least that is what the beast reminds him as he thinks of the large herd he had walked away from in Paradise. Only now the beast hisses its indignation where before it had been all for exploring the mainland in search of Zjeena and Monster. Hound always had that effect on him. At least he was not completely pathetic. He did have Vanya and even Calypso, for however long he could keep her. The desert was under his control and no longer was his dreams haunted by the memories of past lovers so it was not all bad.

He warred with himself as the old stallion thrust his hooves forward and lurched to his feet. Emerald eyes blink back the wolf as Rougaru takes a step backwards to give Hound the room his large, boney frame needed to rise. Years ago, Rougaru always found himself staring up into the eyes of his sire, his own bright gaze expectant and hopeful. Today however they meet eye to eye. As even then, there is no hint of emotion behind the dark eyes save acknowledgement. ’Rougaru.’ his name brings back forgotten memories and cause the handsome stallion to smile. ”It’s good to see you Da.” he begins, an impish grin ghosting into place over the genuine smile. ”I was sure you were nothing but bleached bones somewhere by now.” he teases.
Yet no sooner had the words left his mouth does his smile falter. He remembers. He remembers staring out into the ocean waves, watching with anxious eyes for any signs of his sire’s bobbing head over the frothy waters. He remembers pacing back and forth along the well worn paths of mire and sand, searching for fresh marks of the Hound through the faded scents. He remembers mother’s anxious smile as she tried her best to reassure him that any day Hound would return. He remembers why it is that he set out alone in the first place. ”Where have you been?”
