Home is where your teeth sink in

I’ll keep the door open
in case you come home

The taste of salt and stallion fills his mouth as Fell’s jaws close on the Salem rat’s neck. He attempts to worry the other male, yanking him side to side until Kohelet joins the fray and the Teke wriggles from his grip.

The slender stallion slips away from them, deeper into the Bay. Fell does not register, nor would he care, that the herd is out of danger. He blows steam into the chilly air before curling around Kohelet, checking over her for wounds. One ear is trained on the painted mare, listening to her lungs working hard in her chest, while the other is ticked outwards to track the retreating hoofbeats of the intruder.

When he is sure Kohelet is unharmed, Fell abruptly pulls away and charges into the trees after the Teke. The nimble stallion is not moving quickly, but he has set a course for the Bay border, and Fell is less inclined to follow him over it. The black stallion tears through the deep pine woods, but by the time Işıksız’s sparse tail is visible between the trees, the border is at Fell’s hooves. The Bay stallion throws his head in fury and paces the border a few lengths, weighing whether or not to chase after.

In the end, having just dealt with the violation of his borders and herd safety, Fell does not cross over to leave his home unattended. He turns, bristling and lashing his heavy tail, to return to Kohelet and the others.
