another night alone, a temporary dream

Well, there's nowhere left to go
Stay with me, stay with me

With the season being what it was, Rilke paid extra attention to his borders, ensuring the safety of his growing herd. He was not one to pick a fight unnecessarily but he knew others would listen to their hormones, letting their bodies rather than their minds make their decisions. When he heard a stranger's call and the scents on the wind brought forth not only one but two new stallions to his lands, he promptly made his way toward them to get a handle on the situation. Telling his family to remain together in the heart of the Forest, he made his way through the trees- more nimbly than one would think with his bulky physique- until his golden eyes saw both stout beasts together. One was near his size, so dark it seemed as if a void had found its way into his land, the other towering above although similarly colored to himself. It would be a lie to say he felt no fear seeing the pair; one alone could put his life in check, but both together? He breathed deeply. This was for his family, for their home. The least he could do was try.

He stepped forth, looking between the two of them. Despite the knowledge that this could potentially be his last moment where he felt the earth beneath his hooves, not a tremble gave him away as he spoke. "Greetings," he began, making eye contact not in threat, but to let them know he would fight to the death if it came down to it. Not that he stood a chance, but there was less chance if he didn't even try. "I am Rilke, lead of these lands. What are your names? And what is your business?" As he waited for their answers, he did think on the fact that their demeanor did not seem as if they were here to cause trouble, and their body language did not seem as if they were comfortable with even one another. Did it just so happen that two strange stallions ended up here at the same time? It was a curious thing, but not entirely unheard of. He also knew with it being fall that it brought about more activity for those who generally kept to themselves. Perhaps they were pushed out of their homes by jealous kings, or petty queens. Reigning in his roaming thoughts, he focused his attention on the two, careful to watch for any signs of attack.
