another night alone, a temporary dream

Well, there's nowhere left to go
Stay with me, stay with me

Watching the mare in front of him, he saw the pain written across her features as plainly as her red and white coat. Not knowing the cause, he at least understood the affliction, and his heart ached for not only her, but her child as well. A parent suffering any kind of torment always affected the children too, and whether or not the young ones knew the why, they at least knew when their parents were not at their best. Champagne eyes looked back and forth between the pair, locking in on the mare when she spoke her name, flitted down to the girl when she said her own, then back to the woman as she dismissed him. He did not take it to heart, knowing full well where she was coming from, and instead answered, "Nobody is good company all the time." The painted man could have added more, but this moment wasn't about him, and he was not trying to outshine her problems by sharing his own, and so he left it with the simple statement.

He didn't speak anymore, and instead sat in the silence with her in- what he hoped- companionable silence. The fall had been deepening, it was getting close to the turn of winter, and he still could not find it in himself to leave them out here on their own. Not only with the threat of roaming stallions, but with the oncoming threat of the winter chill. Coincidentally as he thought of the cooler weather, a breeze swept across his thickening coat, and he closed his eyes against its icy kiss. As he opened them once more, he sighed, his gaze settling on Eirlys. "I do not wish to presume, or to push, but if you both need somewhere safe to stay, if you need shelter, you are welcome to come with me to the Forest. And to leave when, if, you wish." Not having any more to stay, he waited, hoping she would come home with him, but he would not force her, even if leaving her behind would eat at him. He could not let himself hurt for those who made their own choices. And yet... That's always how it seemed to happen. What he would give to be cold, to be ruthless, to not care. Except here he was, waiting expectantly on an answer from a mare who didn't seem too inclined to make the choice that would make him feel better.
