warning signs like butterflies

i am under no obligation
to make sense to you

Kohelet mingled quietly with the herd, her mind a hundred miles away. Learning of her mother's imprisonment by the same stallion that had nearly taken her had filled her with a rage that was hard to shake and wholly uncharacteristic of her. If only she'd rounded on the soot-colored cretin the moment he appeared, she and Fell might have been able to deal enough damage together to cause him to flee the island rather than just the Bay.

This combination of guilt, anger, and fear had sustained her the past few days, and even now - as she pawed mindlessly at the snow-covered ground in search of sustenance - gave her something to mull over. Kohelet had never been a war-minded mare. She was gentle to a fault, and it was only in times of great duress that she ever managed to grasp onto the fire that made Sicily, well, Sicily. This might be enough of an impetus to move her beyond the gentle herd matriarch she seemed poised to become.

A lurch from the child she carried broke her from her thoughts, and she begrudgingly raised her head from the snow. She'd learned the hard way with this pregnancy that once the boy she carried - for she was certain this, too, was a boy - would make eating impossible until he was done with his gymnastics for the day. There were only so many times she could handle her stomach and diaphragm being rammed into before even the thought of grass made her queasy.

Her gaze trailed over each of the Bay's herd members in turn appraisingly. There were many of them now that she still wanted to speak to, but she so rarely knew the circumstances of their arrivals that she often felt like she was putting her foot in her mouth when she went to greet them. She was fairly certain, however, that the majority of them were not here by choice... at least not in the beginning. Some of them seemed to have settled into their new accommodations, such as the little blue roan mare that Una had so charmingly welcomed. Others, like the reddish giant that Kohelet's gaze rested on now, still seemed uncomfortable with their situation.

She wished that she could help them adjust. She knew she could not singlehandedly change their minds about Fell - charming them was his responsibility after all - but she hoped that they would at least find some sort of comfort in the herd of the Bay. The wellbeing of the Bay's members was something she took personally, especially with the responsibility Fell had granted her. Lifting her dark muzzle, she whickered quietly to the red mare whose name she still did not know, and excused herself from those she had been grazing with.

"Hello," she greeted warmly, trying to ignore the anxious beating of her heart. No matter how many horses she greeted, meeting someone new always made her slightly nervous. "I don't think we've met before. My name is Kohelet. What is your name?" Her ears perked toward the mare as she waited for an answer, and she offered a gentle smile before prompting the pretty mare with another question. "How are you finding the Bay?"
