Thankfully, the pretty Arabian does not seem to be upset at Róisín's awkwardness, and extends her a grace that the dun mare most definitely does not deserve. Khayali would be well within her rights to scold Róisín for gawking, even if her observation had been admiring, rather than lasvicious in nature.

The little dun repeats the mare's exotic-sounding name in her head, but resists the urge to do so vocally. It was bad enough that she'd already been so awkward, the last thing she needed to do was to look even more strange before her. "Well, welcome to the Lost Isles then," Rói offers with a soft laugh. The fact that Khayali had been alone made a little more sense now; surely if she'd been on the isles for more than a day, some enterprising herd leader would have already snapped her up.

"Lucky for you, you washed up on the center island." Rói continued, gesturing briefly at the land around them. It was hard to keep her eyes off of the silver-coated mare, but she felt like she needed to look away at least sometimes, lest the other mare clock her for staring. Khayali was the first creature - apart from Djuna - that she'd really met that had been new to the islands, and she was unsure if she was supposed to offer her an explanation of where everything was, or if she should move onto a different topic. At least talking about the other islands was a generically neutral avenue of discussion, one that didn't have many opportunities for Rói to falter any more than she already had.

"I don't want to overwhelm you with all of it," she said with an awkward little laugh and a friendly smile. "But if you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them for you." Another smile, accompanied by a crinkle of the eye and an anxious flick of her tail. "I asked because I hadn't seen you before, and I'm pretty sure I'd remember a face like yours."

It took Róisín a moment to realize she'd been staring for a mote too long, and she glanced up at the top of the falls thoughtfully while she tried to gather something interesting to talk about next. The problem wasn't that she couldn't think of anything, but that she didn't know which thing to focus on. She had no idea which line of discussion would help the little Arabian warm up to her any more than she had any idea of why it mattered to her so much. Eventually, she turned her mismatched gaze back to Khayali and inquired further, hoping she'd picked the right avenue. "What brought you to the isles then?"

i'm trying to be brave, because when i'm brave
other people feel brave, but i feel like my heart
is caving in
