don’t be like the rest of them, darling solomon

Eve

Though she had expressed interest in the idea of visiting her firstborn's burial site with Solomon, it had taken Eve longer than she expected to be truly ready to visit. Now, with the air turning cooler and winter fast approaching, she felt a burning desire to go to the Crossing. It felt urgent in a way that made no sense, given how long she had put it off, almost as though if she waited too long either she or Solomon may change their mind about the whole idea.

Eve stood on the shore at dawn, and her love did not keep her waiting long. The swim was cold but not unbearable, and the journey felt swifter for it. She emerged slightly ahead of Solomon and fought the urge to sprint in the direction of the Common. However eager she was, it had been too many years. Adding to that her emotional state the last time she'd seen her filly's tree, and she truthfully did not know exactly where the place was.

Cool water dripped off her body as she wrestled with feeling like a bad mother: because her daughter had died, because she'd so easily been led away, because she hadn't yet returned. Closing her eyes, she scolded herself. There were several other young horses that were alive because of her, including two who'd helped her feel like a mother after the most terrible loss. Nobody was perfect, but she was not an inadequate mother. If only she had always been so kind to herself.

Solomon joined her momentarily, and she leaned into his solid frame. It comforted her to know that he was with her. Ironic, with how their lives together had started. Eve knew he too had regrets about that day, and she hoped they could further heal together. She reached her freckled lips up to tug at his mane. "Lead the way."
