SCREAMING IN THE DARK, I HOWL WHEN WE'RE APART
"Who is it?" The question hung in the air unanswered for several seconds. Several long seconds if you asked Úna, as ignoring her mother was a good way to get in trouble. Finally she stepped from the trees sheepishly, her head low and tail tucked. "It's me, momma." Despite the fact that she had been sent off with her father, Úna couldn't help be curious. She'd been told she wouldn't be the baby anymore and at first she wasn't sure she liked the idea of that. After all, being her father's little girl was her favorite job in the whole world. (Not that she was quite a little girl anymore.) The threat of a smaller sibling, girl or boy, had weighed heavily on her mind.
However, all of that fear and anxiety is gone the minute she looks at him. He's solid black, like the sky on a cloudy night and Úna's eyes go wide. She takes an eager step forward, though stops herself and backs up two paces. She's never seen her mother look quite like this, at least not since her first own birth and it's not an event she remembers. "Can I...come closer?" She finally asks, rather timidly.
"Does he have a name?" Úna lifts her head high on her slender neck as she tries to get a better look at the small dark bundle. Unlike both her and Kohelet, he was not covered in bright white patches. He reminded her of Kho that way. "He reminds me of Kho!" She giggles but quickly squeaks and speaks quieter, "Sorry, I didn't mean to be loud."
"This is a lot of responsibility for me, you know." She says, keeping to hushed tones, but loud enough for Kohelet to hear. "Do you think he likes birds? I bet Bluebird will like him." Úna had always talked more than enough for her and whoever she was speaking to...or at, and she couldn't wait to tell him all about the world. Or what she knew of it at least, as she'd still never left the bay. And what she didn't know, she could imagine. Úna smiled, really smiled. |
