Use caution when the wolf comes knocking;

The silver bay stallion crest the rise leading away from where the majority of his small herd had gathered. Dark ears flicker back and forth as he listens to the sounds of morning rising over the desert. Here and there, songbirds flit across the skies, their dark shapes casting shadows over the tough stands of buffalo grass as they sought juicy insects found clinging to the pear cactus. Gently the dry wind curls around him, lifting the ends of his cream and caramel mane and teasing them in a noiseless dance. Paper thin nostrils flare as the stallion inhales the crisp sweet scent of water and glances towards the east where the rays of sunlight glistened off the muddy waters of the oasis making them shimmer. Everything seemed so serene… so peaceful.

’DDDDDAAAAADDDDDYYYYYY!!!!! the quiet is broken by the loud shrill squeal of a child, causing the birds to burst into the skies with their own sharp chirps of displeasure. Dark ears turn backwards as the great stallion stiffles a groan and glances back in the direction from which he had come. He can just make out her small form as she races back and forth down the well trodden path, still screaming his name at the top of her lungs. ”Welp,” he begins with a sigh, turning around, ”Almost made it.” he gripes though even his displease is tinged with amusement. The deep bellow of his nicker rumbles over the ruckus of her shrieks and he chuckles to himself as her small brown and white form skids to a halt and races towards him. Even with the distance separating them, he can see the excitement dancing in her emerald eyes despite the displeased turn of her tiny ears. ’Dadddddyyyyyy! Why did you leave me! You promised you would wake me today.’ she huffs as she comes to a prancing halt in front of him. The mask of hurt on her face enough to shame him into submission. ”I’m sorry Tala. You were just sleeping so soundly I did not want to wake you.” he lies. Actually he had dreaded her waking. In the past few weeks, as her need for Vanya’s milk began to ebb away, the little silver bay tobiano filly had become more and more of his shadow. As if she had really taken to heart her mother’s request that she keep an eye on him for her.

If she recognized the lie or not, Rougaru could not tell. Immediately, the small girl turns her bright gaze to the trail that lay before them. ’Where were you going anyway? Are you going to meet sis again?’ she asks beaming up at him. The stallion’s dark ears tilt back, her fondness of Nyimara is not amusing in the least. Though Vanya was not exactly mother of the year material, he would rather her take after his ballerina queen than look to the silver witch for guidance. Nyimara’s ambitions were not always the best laid plans. Somehow, it always seemed to work out for her in the end but he did not want Tala going down the same dangerous path. ”No.” he begins, straining to keep his voice neutral and devoid of emotion as he once more turns around and begins his decent down the hill. ”I was just going to patrol the eastern border.” he murmurs, doing his best to make the task sound boring. With any luck, she would opt for joining her mother and the others. But he cannot rid himself of her that easily. With a kick of her heels she charges ahead of him, bouncing back and forth in front of his hooves excitedly. Twice he had to stop just to keep from stepping on her tiny hooves and as much as he loved all his children, he had to remind himself she was just a baby. ”Wouldn’t you rather go play with your brothers and sisters?” he asks with an exasperated sigh as yet again he skirts her rump as she halts to investigate a rabbit hole beside the pathway. ’No. They are boring.’ she replies with a rather matter of fact tone. Of course he knows that this is not true, in fact, he has seen them all splashing and giggling in the shallow waters on the bank of the oasis more times than he can count. She was simply being obstinate like her mother. She would not let him get away from her that easily.

”Come on then.” he replies with a gruff nudge as he urges her up the pathway. Though she was not quite the company he sought, at least he could say that he was not alone anymore.
