days in the sun will return

HOW IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS SORROW
can so much hope and love endure?

The sigh from his lips, caught by her tilted-back ear, made Maziel smile. Learning all too well the preciousness of soaking in little moments like this, the dun mare allowed them the tranquility of sharing it together. She kept her chin rested on his back, enjoying the way his body-warmth soaked into hers so much that she pressed a little firmer, more fully, into him. Too, every breath she drew was filled with both his rich, masculine scent as well as the wild, crisp cold of Tinuvel. Maziel trusted Fell infallibly from the very moment they first crossed paths on the beach, when she was injured and vulnerable. His further care with her - for her - only set her feelings in stone.

Maziel’s thoughts drifted as she closed her eyelids over her milky eyes, thinking of Fell she tucked against, of their child impatiently moving in her womb and pressing uncomfortably against her swollen sides, and eventually back to the day Mariael had come to see her. She had thought of that day often and the more time passed and she did not leave the Bay to visit the Arch, she wondered how patient Mariael could be. She also wondered what Mariael’s reaction would be to see Maziel pregnant (or with a foal at her side, depending) and understand without doubt that it was another reason Maziel had chosen the Bay.

“If Mariael hasn’t come to visit before summer is through, I’d like to take our child and Charmeine for her to meet, and so I can meet my nephew.” She said, her words careful but deliberate. A part of her hoped Mariael would grow tired of waiting for Maziel to visit and come to the Bay herself. Maybe they could even meet in the meadow they used to nap and play in when they were fillies. Maybe the more time Mariael spent in the Bay she’d see how good of a leader Fell was for it, and how much it was home for Maziel.

“Along with you, of course.” She added, though truly, Maziel wanted Fell to accompany her and Fell likely wanted to go without saying. Yes, Maziel knew she was capable of going to see her sister on her own, but if she was going to be leaving the Bay, she would like Fell to be with her. Especially if it would be her and her two daughters; she still remembered the fear that golden stallion had put in her like it was yesterday, even though Charmeine was plenty grown now. Maziel had no intention of reliving the experience.
