I didn't say all STATIONS repeated 300 songs, I was talking about so called 'greatest hits' stations, like 94.9 mostly playing a certain TEMPO to maintain an energy level but ignoring ballads for example. Now I've been outta the market for awhile but we have one like 84.9 here. Same TopGun tempo. I was an MD myself and was jocking during the early 70s. I know what people listen to because for 40 years I've been OUT of radio and listening to other venues. Radio's locked into their top40 thing, heavy repetition, running their product into the ground. I dont think radio programmers really understand what the oldies appeal is, other than they dont like the word oldies because of the word itself. Ive said it enough times so that if you've followed me you know I've said its the feeling of SURPRISE, a nostalgic release of endorphins hearing a song you LOVED, that you dont hear twice a week.
Good times GReat Oldies seems to get that because they playlist is obviously much larger. Not to say they dont have a A rotation...they do. But they do surprise their listeners...and their list is wide enough so that daily at-work listener doesn't grow tired of every song... they stick enough rarely played oldies to accomplish that "Wow, I havent heard that for years" endorphin release I'm talking about.
I dont wanna rehash the same old shit but what I dont understand is why you're so fond of bullying ME. There has to be things in corporate broadcasting that bothers you more than I do.
I dont even come in here that often because I'm busier now and have other rewards. Theres DoxxerJim and I get his problem but if you're not Jim, why do you give a shit about ME? I dont bitch about anything that lots of other people DON'T do... most of the country's down on Trump and the Republican assault on democracy and regaining power at any cost.
Lots of people who aren't Fox watchers believe what I believe. And even more feel the same thing about radio becasuse they dont' listen to radio by the millions. Thats reported regularly in the trades except the trades that exist to talk UP radio. Radio's largely ignored...truly the Internet and TV killed the radio star long ago.
Hell the music they play in the overheads at Five Guys and contemporary restaurants catering to the boomer crowd play better music that radio stations do. WHy? Because top40 radio people still program radio as if they were still going for the 18-34 crowd and thats not who listens to radio.
You radio people still spend too much time listening to each OTHER and not enough time trying to regrow your audience to what it once was.
You should be playing stuff they play on the VOICE, and the GotTalent shows. And the naivite of the one guy who gets on and says forget about boomers...he's been wrong for 20 years and now they're gone, their habit has been broken. My kids never listen to radio, theyre in their 40s. They subscribe. And what they pay costs them the same amount as a dinner out, and they go out to dinner twice a week
Radio people have written them off. It aint like the 60s when everyone listened to radio. The things most people buy aren't sold on radio, they're sold on TV. SO the advertisers know how to reach them, and if ya wanna know what you dont' reach, watch TV. Watch THEIR spots and realize you dont see em on your logs!
