Good-Bye, Good Riddance

The Jerry Springer Show started as a low-rated political TV talk show in the early 1990s. When that format didn’t work, Springer switched to controversial topics like incest and adultery, punctuated with profanity, physical fights, chair-throwing, nudity and scantily-clad guests.

The Springer Show started getting a LOT of news coverage in the mid-1990s, so I tried to watch it a few times. Five minutes of that was all I could stand. It was total trash, and I was sure it wouldn’t last.

To my surprise (and consternation), trash sells. The Springer Show’s chair-throwing and nudity stayed on the air for almost 27 years, spawning many imitators.

When The Springer Show finally hit the skids, NBCUniversal tried a courtroom show titled Judge Jerry, but that went to the crapper, too.

Springer died at his home near Chicago, Illinois, on April 27, 2023, at the age of 79. A family spokesperson said he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months prior to his death.
