GUIDELINES

- the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
- anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors
whatever you do;

make certain your hands are clean ; When word comes from one of Arsinoe’s many trips to the Hills that Evrain stuck to his word, Rafe doesn’t hesitate to tell Riesling. His sister hasn’t strayed far from the western edge of his home since her arrival, gaze always glued to the horizon as if by sheer force of will she could see across the vast expanse of the Desert that separates them from the Hills. As used to the foul moods of Velahrn as they are, none of his herd has disturbed her and instead left her to haunt to borders of their home.
Unsurprisingly, when the news of Claret returning to Luthien his sister demands to leave immediately. And Rafe should be fine letting her go - she’s a mare grown, more than capable of defending herself from whatever she finds between Salem and Luthien. But Rafe hasn’t left the Badlands since Kohelet arrived, unwilling to risk her running or Fell swiping her while he is out, and he’s going stir-crazy.
A visit to Zevulun, a chance to renew whatever tentative alliance they had can only be a good thing, right? So he follows with her, and when they come ashore he is set to shadow Riesling until they find her family, until he can discuss with Zevulun. Instead, he catches a familiar scent on the wind – one he never expected to catch again, after their liaison.
He parts from Riesling with an affectionate brush of his muzzle and heads in the opposite direction. Her voice is what seals it, the tentative sound of his name on the wind enough to have him picking up the pace. There she is, as pretty as when he’d happened across her in the Bay hunting for Mae. “Kanti,” Rafe murmurs, taking a half-step forward and reaching out to her with a muzzle. The colt at her side is obviously the result of their interlude, the child that Fell had come trying to trade Viveka for. He’s dark and white-splashed, lighter mane and tail a perfect mix of the two of them. Seeing him grown and never having the chance to meet him sends a minor frisson of guilt through him, but Rafe shakes it away.
He cannot regret denying Fell’s request - what Viveka went through, the trauma of being returned to her abuser was never something to even consider. It would have been the highest level of cruelty to condemn her to such fate. He had to hope Kanti was allowed to live, allowed to birth the child – and after knowing Kohelet, he was nothing but confident that Fell hadn’t been allowed to kill the mare.
“I am glad to see you outside of the Bay,” he murmurs sincerely. “When last I went, I couldn’t find any evidence of you.”
Whatever torture Fell may have cooked up based on his rage against Rafe and his theft of Kohelet cannot hurt them here. “And our son - What did you name him?” He is curious to see why she is here with Zevulun, but knows well enough from Riesling’s ranting and his own experiences with Viveka and Sabriel and the ensuing argument that Zevulun has a soft spot for mares in need. Perhaps that is all this is - and perhaps Kanti and the colt will wish to return with him, to the Badlands where they belong.
