In the lingering darkness, the details of her features were harder to make out, even with the thin blanket of snow to reflect the moon's silvery light back onto them. He was left with only the impression of her sorrowful eyes, the clench of her jaw, the tautness of her figure. Suleiman didn't want to add to her stress, but it was hard to look away from her. She was a mystery to him, and he couldn't help but be curious, especially when wondering about her gave him a break from the self-flagellation he was otherwise engaged in.
No, she murmured, and he hid a somber half-smile as he reluctantly tore his gaze from her. He could feel the sadness in that single word and it struck an answering chord in his chest. No, he didn't really want to be alone either.
Suleiman kept an ear tilted back in her direction but allowed his gaze to roam across the horizon line while he contemplated what to say next. There was a peace to be found in sharing one another's company without words, but he was also curious about the mare next to him. It was not often that he was approached by a stranger in the wee hours of the morning, and he couldn't help but wonder what her story was. What had brought her to the Crossing all alone like this, what kept her from sleeping til dawn broke?
"Do you want to talk about it?" He offered, despite being fairly certain of the outcome. If this little mare was anything like him, the last thing she would want to do was talk about what bothered her. Then again, Sul had heard it said that strangers were the best to discuss thorny issues with; who else could provide an unbiased opinion?
