Captor and Companion
Tyr felt an uncomfortable squeeze inside his chest, making his heart give a few heavy thumps as if threatening to crawl up into his throat. The stallion had to briefly struggle with himself not to give in to the desire to flinch away as if her words had struck him. As if she could read his mind, to see the memory he still carried of how they had met. How they had existed together. Tyr had never thought Kvothe to be unhappy as his companion in the Lagoon. The red mare had gone willingly into his grasp. But the collar had been tightened around her neck all the same; once she had stepped into the Lagoon, there had been no escape.
Could he allow her to escape his clutches, even now? Or was she as much of a prisoner here, in the warmth and sun of Atlantis, as she had been in the dark swamp of the Lagoon?
Tyr battled with himself not to guiltily pull away from Kvothe. He didn’t know if it was her lack of knowledge now that made him feel so guilty, or that he was so selfish that he knew the answer to his own question. The golden stallion did his best to be better. To not be such a beast. But no matter how strong he resisted his nature, his childhood teachings, there was only so much he could give. Only so much he could let go. Kvothe was not one of them.
Thankfully she had not even come close to asking him that. Instead, it was only Tyr’s emotions that had derailed into chaos inside his mind.
Even more grateful, the subject was changed.
“You knew of Oswin, but you never met her. She did not live with us before.” Tyr replied, managing to keep his voice even, and not allowing the brief moment of chaos to enter his tone. Instead, as she hide her face away in the curtain of his mane, Tyr edged a bit closer (if that were possible) and hooked his chin over her withers. Holding the red mare as she tried to ground herself with her own doubts and fears. Grateful that he had not shown his own, in case it would have made hers worse.
