Eirena had been hesitant, at first. She had followed Zevulun home despite the sadness she kept in her heart. It was still there, even now, but she he had grown to care for the herd, and for him. The nights she had spent resting with the herd had lessened her nightmares. Though the first few months Eirena had spent her nights on her own in the distance, thrashing in the throes of sleep each night. Every night she saw the broken bodies of her family and screamed awake each morning. The morning walks to water to ease her weak throat had become a morning ritual and often times she would see Zevulun up and greeting the day as he patrolled. He had taken her in and protected her, even when everything about her behavior pushed him away. And still he welcomed her with a tender heart and a kind smile.
And when her belly swelled with child she did not compare it to those she had lost. She mourned them each day with every breath, but she welcomed this new life eagerly. Zevulun's absence during the birth had been hard on her, but perhaps it was best that no one saw the way she wept. Willa was sunshine incarnate. She was everything to Eirena.
When the rogue stallion had appeared she had tucked her daughter into the tallest grass she could and there they had remained. Zevulun was good to them. She trusted him. She trusted him to return. She was grazing quietly in the corner of the prairie, the corner nearest the thicket, when the shifting winds brought his scent to her. She pressed a soft kiss to her daughter's golden forehead, "Stay here, my little sunflower." Willa pulled her legs closer to her barrel in response and Eirena turned away.
She loosed a call to him, throwing herself into a gallop. It was not long before she heard the small leaping pats of her daughter following her. Eirena sighed softly but continued. Her hooves dug into the soft sod of the prairie with each step. When she drew near to him she slid to a halt, reaching out to grab Willa's tail before her daughter sped past. Willa gave a buck of protest but quickly ducked behind her mother at the sight of an unfamiliar stallion.
"Zev," she said, tentatively, taking a timid step forward. Her gaze fell to his damaged leg, bruised and bloody and for a moment, she is back there. Back when she lost her first family. Eirena's mouth goes dry and the corners of her eyes sparkle with the threat of tears. "A-are you alright?" She takes another few steps until she is standing before him. Worry clouds her eyes as a tear slides down her cheek. Willa takes a few leaps forward, remaining in her mother's shadow, poking her head around.
"O-oh," she says, shaking her head. She turns her head and presses the yellow girl forward, who looks up at Zevulun with a curiosity unrivaled by most. "Zevulun...," Eirena breathes again, her voice hitching. "What happened?" He had been patient and caring with her for all those months, now it was her turn to care for him. | will you still love me when i'm no longer young and beautiful
