Combination of events

Could it be that out of town broadcasters are just in it for profits and they dont have the staff with the maturity, aggressiveness and experience to do real reporting?

Doesn't local media just rebroadcast whatever the cops tell them? Police say "This" and Police say "That"?

Why are you dumping on the media for being at fault here? Cops are the experts. They all have PIO's, don't they or is Fairway just too small a berg to have staff that can do that?

With the limited report on this site of what happened, I suspect there's more to the story than the original carelessness of someone who left the car running. How did the cop get killed? What was missing here? Was he ambushed? Was there a lack of training? Nother case of a cop handling a situation without sufficient supervision or forces to do the job safely?

I wasn't there, didn't see the report but I've learned after a career in the media that shit happens generally because of a COMBINATION of factors... that is when two bad things happen at the same time, things tend to go badly all the way around.

What happened between the time the bad guy saw and opportunity to steal a car and the officer getting killed?

Without details, we know the car theft happened for at least two things occurred: A stupid owner who left his car running and a thief hanging around the gas station in Pleasantville Fairway Kansas at the same time. What happened next?

We have insufficient data so far to draw any conclusions but I do know that small berg police departments are probably only staffed with enough cops to write tickets on Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Would it have been better if NE JOCO had politically consolidated their emergency services so their forces and had a large enough force to handle crimes that will inevitably occur? Fairway's a hop skip and a jump from KCK which has the social population to expect more criminals--so it follows that police should be able to at least show up on crime calls with two patrolmen and a supervisor? Fairway ain't Mayberry USA needing a force composed of only Andy Griffith and Barney Fife!

Or is this post really about, "Well gosh, somebody should have done SOMETHING to have prevented a dead cop!" So lets blame the media for not teaching criminals not to be criminals, or for drivers not to be careless and provide such easy opportunities for the bad guys? Or should we have reasonable gun laws and background checks so every criminal in the metro can't pick up a gun at Walmart? Waiting for The Rest of the Story--tho the first place I'd look is to see if little Fairway's got enough cops on duty at a given time to handle car thieves with guns when they show up in town. Doesn't America have the highest crime rate on the planet? And why's some criminal hanging around with a gun looking for a car to steal at a suburban convenience store?
