He was still standing there, motionless while his gaze was focused over the reaches of the water where the tide washed over the shoreline. The sound of the flowing water helped to distract his senses. He'd hardly noticed the disturbance in the water's flow when the other male crossed the stream behind him. When movement was finally detected in his periphery, the young stallion snaps his head toward it. As a result of the surprise, a shock of adrenaline flushes cold in his veins, settling as a chill across the planes of his shoulders. It is a black male. Was he trying to get his attention?

Canis watched the stallion bob his head, mouth parting with what he assumed would be sound. Of course, he can't tell over the sound of the water. A surprised, but confused blip of a smile crosses his pale lips. His ears prick forward curiously. Canis gestures toward the gentle slopes covered in beach grass not far away past the black's position. It wouldn't be too close to the beach that the waves would drown them out, but they'd certainly be away from the volume of the river.

The young dappled dun crossed the stream. Freshwater streamed down his cannons as he more or less guided the stranger toward the place he meant for them to move toward. Canis noticed that the black stood not quite a hand shorter than himself. He noticed his missing ear next and wondered what the tale behind that injury was. He couldn't tell from a brief glance how long ago it had happened. Still, the stallion thought about what missing an ear was like.

Once the young male slowed and turned to face the black, Canis dipped his head in a new greeting of his own. His gaze was guarded and unsure, but willing to speak all the same. He wasn't often approached. Not that he'd done enough socializing for that to be commonplace, but he was no less surprised. "Hello," his voice trailed for a moment as if there were a question in his single statement.

He wanted to ask why the other had come up to him and why his ear was missing. Instead, Canis remained quiet. If the stranger had come up to him with purpose, it would surely come forth. If he came to spar, then it would commence. All that remained was for him to simply wait and not just blather on nervously. He was trying to be more sure of himself and was trying to start by not sounding like an idiot. So, silence it was.
