out of the misery, into the unknown | Antares

To say that this last winter was hard on the siblings might be an understatement. In fact, the last three years have been quite difficult for them. Or at least it had been for the eldest pair out of them. What had been a quiet, quaint existence in the vined depths of the Province had become a flood of confusion, grief, and unanswered questions. Three years ago, between the disappearance of their sire and the continued absence of their pregnant mother, there was little a four-year-old Emerson could do but fetch her older brother from the desert territory he seconded to help.

In the weeks and months that followed, neither of their parents was fated to return. It was rumored that Viral might have been murdered, but nothing solid ever came from those claims. As for their mother, Sapphire Moon, that particular line of questioning took a considerable amount of work to find answers to. She had died after the birth of her latest child, their youngest siblings. Emerson had found her mother's body and gotten word of where the child was taken before fetching Martyr.

Since then, Martyr and Emerson had largely raised Tribulation themselves, especially once his nurse mare (a former mare of their father's who had one of their half-siblings to care for) left upon Tribulation's weaning. They weren't prepared for the death of their younger sister Testament not six months later while foaling her own babe. Not to mention their being ousted from their home and the later return. It had been a constant whirlwind, even before the famine and the threat of earthquakes to the north.

Now, they stood on the shores of the Commons. The shivering huddle of them was breathless and exhausted from the long journey. The black-painted mare watched her blue roan brother carefully before letting her azure gaze flicker to the stretch of landscape before them. How far did it stretch? Were they safe here? Had the others made it here as well? These questions and more milled in the tired minds of the Mustang-shaped siblings. This question most of all:

Now what?
