He was gone. Like the hot salem air he had blown in on, the draft stallion had left. Not a goodbye, or a distant call; no sign whatsoever until his scent had faded from the land and another laid his claim. The only remnants of his existence had been the parasite growing in her belly. Bitterness was sharp on the mare’s tongue every day and rested like a stone in her gut. No matter how she tried, it simply would not go away. In the end, Quitaque had given up trying to abort the child, knowing that her body’s refusal had to be some sort of sign. Even if she didn’t know what it was and refused to look for the answer.
When her body finally expelled the child, Quitaque was both relieved and mortified. It had been difficult dealing with it confined in her womb, what would she do now that it had its own thoughts and legs to run off with? In some ways, she didn’t care. Wanting the beautiful roan girl to just disappear. But instinct demanded she keep the stallion’s spawn alive, since it had come from her body too. Giving the girl a strong name, Quitaque would also give the filly the knowledge how to survive, but after that she would leave. The heat of Salem had never been to her liking, and it certainly wasn’t growing on her either.
Tucked in the shade of one of the oasis, Quitaque stood guard over her sleeping child. Sprawled on her side, Skogul nearly looked dead, if not for the rise and fall of her flank to suggest otherwise. The buckskin mother’s green eyes were half closed; head held slightly lower than her withers as she tried to use this time to rest when her child wasn’t so demanding. But her ears, ever alert, did not rest as they made sure nothing approached without her knowledge.
