Well KC's a market big enough that if a TV station wants to stir up trouble, there are lots of pat stories, low hanging fruit that TV stations resort to. Public works is just one of them.
It could be worse. the small market I'm in is too small to even do negative stories on local government. So they in fact make little 90 second mini-movies to fill time between commercials. Those mini-moveies THEMSELVES are commercials for government. Small stations can't afford to pixx off their sources, so they act as PAO's for city gumments, including the cops, fire, pubworks and every other pet project to help people get on tv. My kid and son were on just last night here and I watched the station do a commercial for one of the local tourist attractions. It's what small market TV does because when they smear government or sponsors, those entities always find a way to punish the media for doing their jobs! Yup, I could tell ya real stories how they have done it. And general managers/sales managers will roll over for em every time! Replies:
