the clouds are thunder and lightning

Martyr

The air, saturated with the salt of the sea, was simply alive with the sound of rushing water. Martyr could feel every decibel of it roiling in his ears as he walked along the water's edge. It wasn't an unwelcome sound, despite the arduous journey he and his siblings had undertaken to come here. His dark ears flicked at the thought that soon he and Emerson would be diving back into the sea. A snort fluttered his pale nostrils, and the stallion suddenly darted away from the shore. The roan stallion picked a few paces through the sparse lengths of saltgrass before his pale blue eyes swept over a shoulder and out over the vast expanse of ocean.

After the better part of a week, it had become obvious that neither he nor Emerson were adapting well to the sands of Salem. To their benefit, Antares had a connection with a stallion who would also be willing to take the pair of them on. They would be heading to a different island this time, leaving Antares and the Dunes behind them at least for the moment. Martyr was still going to be able to have his own herd under this new stranger, this new benevolent ally. He marveled at the generosity of these island stallions compared to the cutthroats of the continents they'd left behind.

His train of thought was dashed against the rocks as a call sounded out from nearby. The roan scanned his surroundings and soon noticed the shape of another someway down the Dunes. As he approached, the winds shifted and brought the scent of the mare to him. She was thoroughly soaked through with the smell of seawater. His pale eyes observed the rabicano-marked female curiously. Had she come from one of the other territories and simply gotten caught in the tide only to wash up here? It was altogether unlikely to him that she had swum here straight from the Crossing. They were on the wrong side of the island for that to be physically probable. For only a heartbeat did Martyr hesitate before he spoke: "Welcome to the Dunes, my lady. How might I assist you?"
