I've seen layoffs just like that and have been in them... many industries do that to marketing when they didn't manage to bring the growth results they were created to bring. Few industries remain where you are guaranteed a job for 30-40 years and get a gold watch at the end.
Technology changes, the marketplace changes. Missions change. Sometimes they decide to move their headquarters to another city so everyone's out except for the brass they'll take with them. Been in some of those, and in fact GOT a great job being on the receiving end of a move from Chicago to KC. If we boomers have learned anything, its that change is part of our lives and we must learn to have skills that can change with it. If you lost yours, hope you can find a match without packing up and changing cities. Its a pain in the butt to sell the house, disrupt the spouse's career, and transplant the kids.
That happens more frequently in a niche industry like broadcasting when there aren't too many companies that need what we do in the same city. Replies:
