When the new year rounded the corner, his daughter would be back and her training would begin in earnest for her people. He looks at the stars and wistfully imagines his lost daughter, thinking of the way she’d bid him farewell, so sure she would be winning a war he did not know and could not help in. His bravest child by far, he knew.

Nashira was clever, smart, lovely - but Aminah had also possessed something ‘other’ that he could not put a finger on. Niyat and Nashira were born differently, with far more uncertainty from their parents. It was only right, he supposed. And his parents and his Wife’s own had what they wanted.

He chooses, therefore, to lament no longer outside his heart. He chooses to instead provide the firm step stool his daughter needed so that she might take control of this in her time. A flimsy, emotional, father was not what she needed. She needed the brave and sure man he’d been when her mother had first met him. A man not so invested in his soul or heart to wither when things did not go well. A man who could brace his hooves solid on the shifting sands and let her reach that little bit higher.

He would make the Mira how Sayyida should have had it. The Mira would not be a mouthpiece or a throne divided in power. It had been his own mother, had it not, that impressed good procedure and decisions upon his father? Should he have simply handed the Dunes entirely into Sayyida’s hand? Would she not have withered beside him if he had done so?

Then that was what he must do now. Invest in Nashira so much that she would never be bankrupt of spirit or ambition or strength. Invest her and weave her into the Sadim so that she would seem imperative to all who might choose to bask in her light.

He had failed his soul, his heart, but for his daughter he could not be allowed to do the same. The weight of his failures and missteps and ignorance had cost him enough
