Home is where your teeth sink in

I’ll keep the door open
in case you come home

Tinuvel autumn was coming to a close swifter than the rest of the isles. Snow drifted lazily through the air to land and melt in the next day’s sunlight, and the river edges were gradually icing over, a little more each day. The weather was cooling even while the blood continued to run hot in the excitement of the Fall season.

This one had been calmer than Fell’s past seasons. He hasn’t left the Bay since well before the leaves began to change, and he has no intention of venturing out now. He is content to remain home, protective of his family and experiencing some semblance of peace for the first time since —

The snow softens sound, but only a little. It hasn’t covered the ground enough yet to mask footfalls, and Fell can hear the soft crunching of delicate hooves on the frosted pine needles and hard black earth. His ears flick forward, head raising as he becomes alert and grounds himself from his thoughts. His nostrils flare and his lazy movements are bled into with curious, territorial energy. Then the call rings out, so close by that it makes Fell snort loudly in alarm. He puts the pieces together as he recognizes the voice, and it makes sense that Parvati had pranced right in and gotten this far without alerting himself or Zurok. Still, he feel silly for being startled.

Shaking off the few melting flakes of snow that have settled lightly on his scarred black pelt, Fell responds with low blow of air, rippling past his nostrils in an inquisitive rumble. He closes the distance between them until he can actually see her, and then he blows softly again in greeting. His ears come forward, and he wears a friendly but curious expression. His half-ear flicks a few times as a snowflake lands on the scarred seam of flesh. Parvati is a welcome surprise, though they have what Fell considers to be a strange relationship. He, of course, forces down the frantic little struggle of his heart as he sees the face that is so similar to Kohelet’s, but Parvati is more to him now than just the sister and neighbor. They shared a child, somewhere, though he had never met her. And she had been there when Rafe had undone him on the beach, and had not shamed him for his utter uselessness in the days to follow. Fell harbors some embarrassment that she had to witness his failure, but it seems so long ago now that he hardly pays the feeling any mind.
